What is a Birth Doula?
A trained professional who provides continuous physical, emotional and informational support to a mother before, during and shortly after childbirth to help her achieve the healthiest, most satisfying experience possible.
As your Doula, I am there to be a physical, emotional, and mental support for you and your partner. My responsibility is to you, the birthing woman. I am there to be an advocate for you, a sounding board, a calm and reassuring presence during your incredible experience of giving birth!
Some of the kinds of support I offer are:
Physical support: soothing touch, massage, support during positional changes, movement, as well as music, water therapy, and other environmental additions can bring soothing relief during and between contractions and throughout your labor. I am there to provide you with resources during your labor.
Emotional support: By giving you verbal cues and encouragement, giving space to all of who you are and whatever it is you are feeling, your body is able to release tension and feel calmer and seen. I am also there to support your birth partner, whether it is a mate or a close friend or family member. I advocate for them to be as involved as they would like to be!
Education and Advocacy: By providing information and advocacy, I support you in making the most informed decisions for you and your family! I can be a sounding board and provide feedback for you as you make a plan for clarifying your wishes and plans for your birth experience.
As a postpartum doula, I provide evidenced based information on infant feeding, emotional and physical recovery from birth, mother–baby bonding, infant soothing, and basic newborn care.
I am there to help your family in those first days and weeks after bringing home a new baby. Research shows that moms, dads and babies have an easier time with this transition if a good support team is in place. I am there to support you as you settle into your new routine and life as new parents! I'm there to nurture your entire family as you transition into life with a newborn. I work with each family individually to find out your particular needs.
Some of the duties I will perform include:
Most of the time, I provide service for your family anywhere from a few days up to a few weeks after bringing home your new baby. As a postpartum doula, I often offer night time service to help your family transition more smoothly into the challenges of night time parenting. Depending on your needs, I am there to support you and your family at night in whatever way you need!
